How explanation guides belief change

چکیده
Philosophers have argued that people ought to change their graded beliefs via Bayes’ rule. Recent work in psychology indicates sometimes violate rule by attending explanatory factors. Results from computational modeling suggest such violations may actually be rational.

متن کاملGraphical Explanation in Belief Networks
Belief networks provide an important bridge between statistical modeling and expert systems. In this paper we present methods for visualizing probabilistic “evidence flows” in belief networks, thereby enabling belief networks to explain their behavior. Building on earlier research on explanation in expert systems, we present a hierarchy of explanations, ranging from simple colorings to detailed...
متن کاملHow evolution guides complexity.
Long-standing debates about the role of natural selection in the growth of biological complexity over geological time scales are difficult to resolve from the paleobiological record. Using an evolutionary model-a computational ecosystem subjected to natural selection-we investigate evolutionary trends in an information-theoretic measure of the complexity of the neural dynamics of artificial age...
متن کاملHow do the Harper and Levi Identities Constrain Belief Change?
Belief revision is the process of revising beliefs in light of new information. Belief contraction is the process of giving up beliefs to make them consistent with new information. The Levi and Harper Identities provide constructions of revisions and contractions in terms of each other. This paper gives necessary and sufficient conditions for when revisions can be constructed from contractions,...
متن کاملHow cognitive theory guides neuroscience.
The field of cognitive science studies latent, unobservable cognitive processes that generate observable behaviors. Similarly, cognitive neuroscience attempts to link latent cognitive processes with the neural mechanisms that generate them. Although neural processes are partially observable (with imaging and electrophysiology), it would be a mistake to 'skip' the cognitive level and pursue a pu...
